The honest answer is that it depends, but not in a vague way. The cost of fixing a car scratch comes down to three things: how deep the scratch is, how big it is, and how many panels it crosses. Once you understand those, the price stops being a mystery. This guide walks through how scratch repair is actually priced, what pushes the cost up, and how to keep a small mark from turning into a big bill.
How deep is the scratch?
Car paint is built in layers. On top is a clear lacquer, under that is the colour coat, then primer, then the bare metal panel. How far a scratch cuts through those layers is the single biggest thing that decides the cost.
- Light surface marks. If the scratch only sits in the lacquer, it has not reached the colour at all. These often polish out, with no paint needed. This is the cheapest outcome by a long way.
- Through to the colour. Once the scratch is into the colour coat, it needs paint. That means prep, an accurate colour match and lacquer over the top. More work, but still a contained job.
- Down to bare metal. A deep scratch or a stone chip that exposes metal needs filling and priming before any colour goes on, and it needs sorting quickly before rust starts. More on that below.
A quick test: run a fingernail gently across the scratch. If your nail does not catch, it is usually shallow and may polish out. If it catches, the scratch has broken the surface and will need paint.
How big is it, and how many panels does it cross?
A short scuff on one door is a small job. A key line that runs across two doors and a wing is a much bigger one, because a proper repair blends the paint into each panel it touches so there is no visible edge. The cost roughly tracks the number of panels involved, not just the length of the scratch.
This is why the same length of scratch can cost very different amounts. A 10cm scratch in the middle of a single door is straightforward. The same 10cm sitting right on the join between two panels means blending both, which takes longer and uses more material.
What pushes the price up
A few things add to a scratch repair beyond depth and size:
- Metallic and pearl paints are harder to match and blend than a flat solid colour, so they take more care to get right.
- Dents alongside the scratch. If the panel is creased as well as scratched, the dent has to be sorted first, which is a separate bit of work.
- Rust that has already started. If a deep scratch has been left and corrosion has set in, the rust has to be cut back to clean metal before painting. Left far enough, that becomes a welding job rather than a paint one.
The cheapest scratch to repair is the one you bring in early, before water gets to bare metal and rust spreads.
Why a small scratch is worth sorting sooner
It is tempting to leave a scratch, especially a small one. The problem is what happens out of sight. A scratch that has gone through the paint exposes bare metal, and once rain and road salt reach it the area starts to corrode. What could have been a quick paint repair turns into cutting out rust later, which costs more and takes longer. We cover this in detail in our guide on stone chips and rust.
There is a resale angle too. Kerbed bumpers, door dings and scratches knock money off what a car is worth and stand out on a lease handback. A tidy repair usually pays for itself when you come to sell or return the car.
Scratch repair versus a full respray
People sometimes assume a scratch means respraying a whole panel or even the whole car. It rarely does. Most cosmetic damage only needs the affected area repaired and the colour blended into the panels around it. A full respray is for cars with widespread fading, heavy damage across many panels, or a colour change.
If your car has more than the odd scratch, or you fancy a different look entirely, there are two other routes worth knowing about. Our same-day car paint service handles scratches, scuffs and bumper damage with proper colour matching. If you want to change the colour or protect the paint underneath, a vinyl wrap can be a cheaper, removable alternative. We compare the two in car wrapping versus respray.
How to get a straight price
No honest garage can give you an exact figure for a scratch over the phone without seeing it, because the depth and panel count change everything. What you should expect is a clear, free, no-obligation quote once someone has looked at the car, with no work started until you have agreed it.
When you bring a car to us in Tottenham Hale, we tell you straight whether a mark will polish out or needs paint, then quote on what it actually needs. Most single-panel scratch and scuff jobs go back the same day if you drop the car off early. We work on cars and vans of all makes for drivers across North London, and we are open every day from 08:00 to 22:00.
If you have a scratch you want looked at, call us on 07349 766832 or message on WhatsApp and bring it in for a free look.
Good to know
Can a car scratch be repaired without respraying the whole panel?+
Usually yes. Most scratches only need the affected area prepped, painted and blended into the surrounding panel, not a full panel respray. A full respray is reserved for widespread damage, heavy fading or a colour change. We tell you which your car needs before quoting.
Will the new paint match the rest of my car?+
Yes. We match to your car's paint code and blend the repair into the panels next to it so there is no obvious edge. Metallic and pearl colours take more care to match, but a proper blend means the repair is not noticeable.
Is it worth fixing a small scratch straight away?+
Usually yes. A scratch that has gone through the paint exposes bare metal, and once water and salt reach it the area can start to rust and spread. Catching it early means a small, cheaper repair instead of cutting out corrosion later. It also keeps the car tidy for resale or a lease handback.
How long does a scratch repair take?+
Most single-panel scratch and scuff jobs go back the same day if you drop the car off early. Bigger repairs across several panels take longer. We will tell you a realistic turnaround once we have seen the car.
